Sohyon Sowon (School), National Treasure
Sohyon Sowon (School) is located in Sokdam-ri, Pyoksong County in South Hwanghae Province.
It had been a building where a famous Confucianist Ri Yi in the period of Korean Feudal Dynasty taught his disciples and wrote his books, and afterwards it was remodeled into a sowon. Sowon means a private school in regions in those days.
It is divided into two districts; one for shrine and another for lecture hall.
Sohyon Sowon is a good example of sowons in our country as well as Sungyang Sowon to show the appearance of the then local private educational facility and building techniques.
During the Fatherland Liberation War it was severely destroyed by the U.S. imperialists. After the war Sohyon Sowon was restored to the original state thanks to the policy of the Workers’ Party of Korea on protecting the national heritage.
