Labour Code Defends Rights and Interests of Working People

Working life of our people is legally guaranteed by the labour code which genuinely defends rights and interests of them.

After Korea’s liberation from Japan’s colonial rule, a problem to constitute a new democratic labour law in our country was the important demand to provide our people who turn out in building a new country with genuine working life.

President Kim Il Sung led the work to realize such problems as abolition of slave labour, enforcement of eight-hour working system and improvement of working conditions which had been already clarified in the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle period to meet the requirements of development of social economy of the country.

The President personally mapped out articles of the labour law and saw to it that nation-wide discussion on the draft was conducted.

All the people fully supported the draft as it comprehensively and correctly reflected their desire and demand for the democratic working life and suggested declaring it as the law.

In accordance with the unanimous will of the people, the President promulgated the historic labour law on June 24, 1946.

The promulgation of the labour law was a great social change which firstly provided the people, who suffered exploitation and distress with no right for a long time, with the legal system for leading independent and creative labour life.

Thanks to the law, workers and officials were fully provided with the democratic rights on labour and rest, including eight-hour working system.

Later, the President promulgated "The Socialist Labour Law of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea" to legally further consolidate the socialist labour system of the country.

Our working people are now enjoying benefits from the state with right on labour such as paid leave system, recuperation and relaxation systems at the state’s expense, state and social insurance programs and social pension system.
