Subdivisions of November and Folk Customs

There are Ripdong (the opening of winter) and Sosol (the light snowfall) in November.

Ripdong means the opening of winter as the １９th of the ２４ seasonal divisions according to the lunar calendar and Ripdong falls on the ７th-８th of November.

Sosol means the light snowfall as the ２０th of the ２４ seasonal divisions according to the lunar calendar and Sosol falls on the ２２nd-２３rd of November.

This year, Ripdong falls on Nov. ７ and Sosol on Nov. ２２.

From of old, our people have pickled vegetables (Kimchi) around Ripdong.

From ancient times, our people have given importance to making Kimchi and there are some differences in ingredients, recipes and tastes according to localities.

In the season our people make Kimchi-stuffed buns, different fermented fishes, etc. and do finishing of farm work and effectually prepare for the winter.

Folk games in the season were Yut-game, Paduk (go), Korean chess, etc. and children enjoyed kite-flying, shuttlecock game and others.
