Intangible Cultural Heritage Ssirum (Korean Wrestling)
There are many intangible cultural heritages in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. Among them is Ssirum (Korean wrestling) which is proud of a long history and tradition.
Korean Ssirum is a physical game where two opponents try to push another to the ground, using satpa (a fabric strap used as a handle connecting the waist and leg), torso, hands and legs.
From ancient times, our people have practiced Ssirum for physical training at breaks of work and, especially, for big contests on folk holidays.
Korean Ssirum has a long history, which is well proved by the mural paintings of a tomb during the Koguryo age depicting Ssirum players.
Ssirum can be practiced anytime, anywhere and irrespective of age.
The DPRK inscribed Ssirum on the State ICH Inventory in February 2013 and is undertaking the safeguarding of the element.
Korean Ssirum was inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of UNESCO in 2018.
