Korean Folk Song "Arirang", World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage

Among the intangible cultural heritages created by our ancestors is folk song "Arirang".

The song is one of the typical Korean folk songs popular among the people.

"Arirang" was widely sung in the western area of our country in the late １４th century and, afterwards, a number of regional varieties like "Haeju Arirang", "Onsong Arirang", "Tanchon Arirang" and "Musan Arirang" appeared.

In the era of the Workers’ Party, new songs like "Arirang of Army-People Unity" were produced and the grand mass gymnastics and artistic performance "Arirang" which shows the history of our people with grand epical canvases was splendidly created and performed with the folk song "Arirang" as its seed.

The folk song was recorded in the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of the UNESCO in November ２０１４.
