Among the assistants to soldier builders there are village women of Songhung-dong, Haean District, Hamhung city. They all belong to one and the same neighborhood unit.
The assistance of the village women to the army men has a long tradition.
In various construction sites, big and small, they could be found. They would carry a lot of aid materials with them and work along with the soldier builders in all difficult projects. They are either from servicemen's families or discharged soldiers themselves.
The group of women, about 20 in all, would turn up at the construction sites with vegetables gathered in their gardens and some foodstuffs which they would cook on the spot for soldiers.
Often spending nights, they would make fresh Kimchi (pickled vegetable), bean curds and other tasty dishes to add to the rich tables of the soldiers. The soldiers would gain fresh strength and courage from their disinterested assistance.
